TJ Hughes to take over empty BHS site near Glasgow

TJ Hughes has signed a deal to move into a former BHS store at East Kilbride shopping centre near Glasgow as part of a plan that will see two further locations open in Scotland before Christmas.

The discount department store has currently only one store in Scotland, located in Glasgow city centre.

The new store at East Kilbride will span 31,700 square feet, and open next to the new Flying Tiger site, which opened in a 278-square-foot unit in July. The shopping centre also houses Topshop, Zara, French Connection and H&M and is anchored by Debenhams, M&S, Primark and Sainsbury’s.

Extending to over 1.2 million square feet, East Kilbride is in fact one of Scotland’s largest retail and leisure destinations, and the fact that the former BHS unit took nearly two years to find a new tenant reflects the depressed state of the UK high street.

More than half of BHS stores are still vacant two years after the collapse of the department store, according to research from the Local Data Company. Only a dozen stores have been re-let in the past year, while more than 90 continue to lie empty.

East Kilbride said the new letting demonstrates the shopping centre’s upward trajectory. “Footfall continues to rise thanks to these recent retail lettings and the ongoing success of the centre’s leisure hub,” said Richard Low of Orion Capital Managers.

East Kilbride shopping centre has annual footfall of more than 15 million.
