Springfield Outlet secures two new tenants despite uncertainty

In a sign that the retail market is returning to relative normality, Springfields Outlet, the leading outlet centre in the East of England, has announced that two fashion brands have signed up to open stores at the outler centre post-lockdown.

The announcement is a rare example of two fashion companies taking new space during the coronavirus crisis, as most retailers have been forced to review their store portfolios to cut losses.

Springfields said Dune London has committed to opening a 1,280 sq ft unit in a prime position in the outlet centre. The new store will open post-lockdown, after completing a major top-spec shopfit.

Additionally, Lazy Jacks, a fast-growing British lifestyle brand, has chosen the shopping destination for its debut store. The 911 sq ft space will be inspired by the British Devon coast, offering the brand’s collections of timeless menswear, womenswear and childrenswear.

What makes Springfields Outlet an attractive destination? For one thing, it’s an outdoor centre, which may give nervous shoppers the reassurance and confidence they need to go back to stores.

Springfields also has several ‘eat-on-the-go’ operators such as Springy’s Diner, Frankie & Benny’s, Starbucks, Costa Coffee, Caffé Nero and the Noshery, which will bounce back faster than eat-in restaurants.

Finally, there’s the off-price element. With the UK thought to be heading into a recession, consumers’ purse strings are expected to tighten over the coming months, giving the outlet market a boost.

Ian Sanderson, director of SLR Asset Management, commented: “The two new signings demonstrate significant ongoing interest in Springfields and further illustrates its resilience.

“Both brands are welcome additions to our ever-growing offer, joining Radley London, Joules and other high-profile fashion brands. This uncertain period has been tough on all retailers including us, but we haven’t rested. Signing Dune London and Lazy Jacks during the lockdown is testament to our strength and the appeal of Springfields.”

Zoe Brooks, retail director at Dune London, added: “Springfields has everything we need to build our brand. A great catchment with very loyal customers who match our profile perfectly. We are an ambitious and successful brand and it’s good to be in the company of others like us.”
