Value footwear retailer Shoe Zone and womenswear brand Karen Millen are among the nearly 180 employers named and shamed in a government report for underpaying minimum wage staff.

According to the report, retailers continue to be one of the most prolific offending sectors alongside hospitality businesses and hairdressers.

Karen Millen was found to have underpaid a total of £9,847.20 to 28 workers, while Shoe Zone failed to £804.88 to 15 workers. This compares to the worst offender Wagamama, a food chain, which failed to pay a total of £133,212.42 to 2,630 workers last year.

Meanwhile, Debenhams and Peacocks were notably absent from the list after being fined for underpaying minimum wage staff in 2016.

“There is no excuse for not paying staff the wages they’re entitled to and the government will come down hard on businesses that break the rules,” said Business Minister Margot James.

“That’s why today we are naming hundreds of employers who have been short changing their workers; and to ensure there are consequences for their wallets as well as their reputation, we’ve levied millions in back pay and fines.”

The report comes ahead of the National Living Wage and the Minimum Wage rates rising again in April. The National Living Wage will increase from £7.50 to £7.83 per hour for workers aged 25 and over, and the National Minimum Wage will increase from £7.05 to £7.38 for workers aged between 21 and 24.
