US-based online fashion brand Shein has teamed up with Graduate Fashion Week and will sponsor the People’s Choice Award in the upcoming June event.

The budget brand’s support will stretch across multiple platforms to engage a variety of audience members, including a stand in the exhibition space where Shein representatives will be available to receive CVs and portfolios and a clothing display.

Shein has also pledged to hire a new design intern who will receive a six-week placement at its head offices with full time pay. But it will be more than just an internship, with the winning candidate having the opportunity to design a capsule collection and visit the brand’s Chinese factory to see their collection in production before it goes on sale.

Finally, as sponsor of the People’s Choice Award, Shein will sell a capsule collection composed of the winning designs on its online store. The winner of the People’s Choice Award will also have the opportunity to showcase their collection at the GFW Houses of Parliament reception this Autumn, and present at London Fashion Week in September.

The sponsorship is an important next step for Shein as it transforms itself form an ‘upstart’ into a major player in the UK youth fashion sector. Its links with Love Island stars gave it a major boost last year but a GFW connection boosts its profile in a way that says it is a key part of the fashion mainstream.

“We are incredibly excited to have Shein as a sponsor for the first year ever. Not only are they offering a fantastic internship opportunity, they are offering one design student the chance to create their own capsule collection, which gives the student a great step up into the world of work from education. This is one of our primary aims here at Graduate Fashion Week,” said Martyn Roberts, managing and creative director at Graduate Fashion Week.

The international showcase will open its doors on 2 June and run until 5 June at the Old Truman Brewery in London.
