Rushden Lakes in Northamptonshire has opened two new retail and leisure phases, bringing 10 new retail brands, a dozen new cafes and restaurants and five leisure and entertainment brands.

The investment in more leisure activities by The Crown Estate highlights the structural changes in the retail market, as more consumers choose to spend their money on experiences rather than products.

Trying to capitalise on this shift, Rushden Lakes has opened a 154,000 sq ft leisure and dining destination called The West Terrace. The space is home to a 14-screen Cineworld, including a 4DX screen, a ScreenX, and an IMAX auditorium, as well as a number of leisure brands such as indoor climbing adventure Rock Up, Paradise Golf and family entertainment centre 360 Play

But the shopping centre has also ensured its retail mix remains exciting with the opening of Square Garden, a new 17,500 sq ft boutique retail extension. This has allowed for the opening of ten new premium brands, including Beaverbrooks, Sketchers and Barbour.

Hayley Turley, senior asset manager at The Crown Estate, said: “We are extremely proud to be opening the West Terrace and Garden Square extensions. Our long-term ambition for Rushden Lakes was always to deliver a truly mixed-use destination which has a diverse, appealing occupier mix meeting the needs of the local community, and ensuring its long-term success.”

Rushden Lakes is one of the UK’s newest malls, having opened its doors to the public in July 2017. The destination enjoyed an overall 7.1% increase in like-for-like sales growth in the year to May 2019 and has welcomed over 10 million visitors since opening.
