Large crowds gathered on Thursday evening in Central London as Regent Street officially unveiled its 2017 Christmas lights with live performances and a major shopping event.

The lights display is the largest Christmas illumination in London, with over 300,000 LED lights creating a festive atmosphere.

It was designed by James Glancy Design and references one of Regent Street’s first display of Christmas lights in 1954. The street was the first destination to introduce Christmas Lights to the streets of the West End in the mid-1950s, setting a trend for the rest of London and the UK.

Last year’s theme ‘The Spirit of Christmas’ has been reinterpreted with new colours and additional touches. The display includes 24 hand-crafted spirits which fly the length of Regent Street from BBC in the north to Waterloo Place.

To mark the occasion, shoppers were treated to live performances by British artist Paloma Faith, music group Clean Bandit and English singers Michael Ball and Alfie Boe.

Several stores offered late-night shopping and in-store surprises and treats to kick start the season.
