Poundland to reopen 26 more stores

Poundland has revealed that 26 further stores will be reopening across the UK this week after they shut following the coronavirus outbreak.

More than 50 Poundland shops resumed trading last week as the discount retailer started a phased reopening of its portfolio.

While the company kept the majority of its 800 stores open for essential shopping during the lockdown, about 100 branches closed their doors in March to halt the spread of the virus.

Many of these were in shopping centres which faced difficulties remaining open or had another Poundland outlet close by.

The list of 26 branches opening their doors this week include shops in Bedford, Christchurch, Crewe, Droylsden, Luton, Selly Oak Retail Park and Ilford.

“As an essential retailer, we’ve continued to support customers in hundreds of towns – especially those who manage their budgets week-to-week and find it difficult to bulk buy,” Poundland managing director Barry Williams said.

“But even though we’ve kept serving customers, we know we’re at our best as part of a vibrant thriving high street and that’s why we’re looking forward to our neighbours reopening in the coming weeks. Healthy town centres are the lifeblood of our economy and our communities.”

The stores are reopening with “robust” health and safety measures in place, including security guards at the door, floor markets and perspex screens at checkouts. Staff will also follow "rigorous hygiene routines", with store workers washing their hands every 20 minutes and surfaces being wiped down every hour.
