The animal rights organisation celebrates each year the biggest moments, innovations and fashion brands which contributed to making the world kinder for animals and the environment.

This year, Peta praised Gucci’s announcement that it would stop using animal fur in 2018 by identifying this as the Biggest Fashion Moment of the Year. With the new fur-free policy, Gucci joins the ranks of Armani, Calvin Klein, Vivienne Westwood and Stella McCartney.

London-based designer Faustine Steinmetz has been recognised as the Designer to Watch for her eco-friendly philosophy. The designer held her first catwalk show at London Fashion Week in September and has a no-fur, no-leather stance.

Zayn Malik’s Versus Versace collection won the Collaboration Award, while luxury group Yoox Net-A-Porter was named Most Progressive Luxury Retailer following the ban on fur and angora.

The H&M custom eco-friendly dress that Rooney Mara wore at the Vanity Fair Oscars party in February won the Red Carpet Dress Award, and the Best Vegan Shoes title went to Stella McCartney’s Elyse.

“Animals are not ours to wear, and the cruelty that millions of animals around the globe endure to satisfy the demand for fashion is astounding,” said Peta.

“When used for their skin, wool, or feathers, animals are treated like nothing more than commodities. Thanks to brands such as our compassionate award-winners, this archaic treatment is being ditched for kinder and more sustainable vegan fashions.”
