JD Sports-owned Millets is continuing its UK expansion with the opening of a new store on Barnet’s main High Street on 4 May.

Designed to become the go-to destination in North London for outdoor enthusiasts, the store will take Millet’s total number of shops in the UK to 101. Well-known outdoor brands such as The North Face and Berghaus, as well as trusted labels like Eurohike and Peter Storm, will be stocked in the new store, offering everything from waterproof jackets to tents, walking boots and rucksacks.

The 1,800-square-foot shop will be located in a unit formerly used by The Living Style Furniture Company. It will offer a boot fitting service and kiosks for ordering stock from the retailer’s website. A total of 10 new jobs will be created, from store manager to weekend assistants.

Paul Randles, head of retail at Millets commented: “We’re thrilled to be growing our UK store presence despite the challenges the British high street is facing. This is one of a number of stores we are planning to open this year and we are particularly happy to become a key part of the Barnet retail scene and overall community.”

Founded more than 100 years ago, Millets was part of a firm called Blacks Leisure which was acquired by JD Sports through a pre-pack administration in 2012. Blacks Leisure’s two outdoor brands, Blacks and Millets returned to profit in 2017 after a decade of losses.

JD Sports has a strong stable of outdoor brands, also including Go Outdoors and Ultimate Outdoors. Most of these retailers stock outdoor clothing brands owned by Pentland, which is a majority shareholder in JD Sports.
