New Retail Leader Apprenticeship supported by big brands

RetailTrust, a trade charity for the retail sector, the government and a group of retailers have announced a new apprenticeship degree that will begin next year with at least 400 retail employees.

The first of its kind to be approved for the retail sector, the Retail Leader Apprenticeship will aim to help businesses recruit talented people and provide them with strategic,  technical, managerial and leadership retail skills.

The four-year programme will be fully or partially funded from employers’ apprenticeship levy funds, depending on the size of their business, giving them the option to claim back up to £22,000 of their funds per student.

Apprentices will work full-time, while studying towards a Bachelor of Arts degree at their chosen university. Retailers including House of Fraser, JD Sports, Jigsaw, Paul Smith, Tesco and Dunelm have signed up to the scheme.

Amy Prendergast, head of People and Vocational Learning Services at RetailTrust, said: “We are thrilled that the brand new Retail Leader Apprenticeship Degree has been approved for delivery next year. The programme is the first of our supported degrees developed collaboratively with the industry. We have 12 retailers on board and would encourage other businesses to make the most of their levy funds and develop their next generation of leaders.”

The retail qualification is part of a series of supported degrees for retail being developed by RetailTrust.
