This week mountain bike clothing manufacturer Kitsbow released the Drifter Jean, which looks just like classic denim except it's been refined to suit cyclists.

It's part of a growing trend that's spawned from the rise of urban cycling: Young professionals looking to stay fit and avoid traffic have shunned traditional spandex bike-racing gear for streetwear that accommodates their mode of transport.

Modified for comfort in the saddle with an interior gusset that's modeled after vintage tailored suit pants, the Drifter Jean is a prime example.

Parting with traditional denim that cyclists say hinders their range of motion, the Drifter Jean ($230, unisex) blends Lycra for stretch with ultra-durable Cordura in addition to cotton.

Otherwise slim-fitting, the Drifter Jean leaves room in the thigh area and a crescent-shaped seam in the knee to accommodate the pedaling position.

The inside of the left leg features a reflective patch for enhances visibility.

Around the industry, companies are adapting their products to reach out to the urban cyclist's demand for clothing that's a mix of sportswear and street style.

Influential brands such as Levi's -- with its men's Commuter line -- have zoned in on the trend and KeirinCut Jeans recently launched after a runaway Kickstarter campaign that earned $116,150, almost triple the goal of $37,786.

Cadence has created its own denim with the cyclist in mind, with unisex jeans starting at $110, Rapha's men's jeans come in a variety of colors and offer a loose fit, starting at €180, and Osloh is a new brand that's tailored exclusively to the urban cyclist, offering men's jeans and shorts.
