Surrey Heath Borough Council has acquired the 1980s-built Camberley Mall shopping centre for £86m as part of a £110m plan to regenerate Camberley in Surrey, UK. Few details are available but it it known the council plans to revamp the property.

The 390,000-sq-ft mall houses more than 150 retailers and includes brands such as Claire’s, Boots, Deichmann, House of Fraser, Monsoon, New Look, River Island, Topshop and Topman. The council is hoping to attract new names to the mall.

The council is acquiring the property from Capital & Regional, which said that the sale resulted from an unsolicited approach by the local authority. Capital & Regional said it would use £45m of the proceeds from the sale to pay off debt with the rest being reinvested in its remaining shopping centre business.

Surrey Heath Council has been extremely active in acquiring properties that would boost growth in the area and was heavily involved in the long-delayed building of The Atrium in Camberley, a mixed-use development that includes retail and hosts Next, H&M and Moss Bros, among others.
