Since coming to Lids, Maughan has played a key role in driving growth at the Indianapolis-based company, overseeing all aspects of product, marketing, merchandising, partnerships and distribution.

His achievements at the Ames Watson-owned retailer include implementing an improved business process through the introduction of data analytics to support merchandising and allocation decision making. In addition, he has led improvements in the company’s product assortment, ultimately driving record sales thanks to increased margins, higher in-stocks and additional traffic.

“Lids' performance metrics are at all-time highs including traffic and conversion,” commented Maughan in a release. “I am excited to leverage my expertise as a retailer and merchant to take Lids to new heights, including signing new partnerships and expanding our footprint both domestically and internationally.”

Before joining Lids, the executive spent five years at sports apparel retailer Fanzz, before it was acquired by Ames Watson in 2019. He held a range of roles at the brand, including VP of buying and marketing, and president. His previous experience also includes leadership positions at Wal-Mart, where he served as senior planner, and Overstock.com, where he was a buyer.

“We are incredibly proud to announce that Britten Maughan is the president of Lids, effective immediately,” said Lids chairman and CEO Tom Ripley. “Over the last three years, I have watched Britten's influence, scope of control and professionalism raise the level of performance of both his team and his peers. Britten is well prepared to lead Lids in its next phase of growth.”

In parallel with Maughan’s promotion, Ripley is transitioning to executive chairman, a role in which he will focus on Lids’ growth initiatives, especially those targeting international expansion. Maughan will report directly to Ripley, who is also a co-founder and partner of Ames Watson.

Lids is the largest headwear retailer and the largest brick-and-mortar retailer of licensed sports products in North America. The company currently boasts 2,000 stores.
