Khaite, Bode winners at star-studded 2022 CFDA awards

Published
Nov 9, 2022

The CFDA awards, held at Casa Cipriani Monday night, were lit. Literally. Taking in the unusually warm temperatures, guests, including Julia Fox, wearing an open front gown that revealed a bikini, took to the expansive terrace in the Battery Maritime Building overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge and passed a joint.

Meanwhile, guests at the second step-and-repeat smelled something else burning. It came from a guest whose feather boa caught fire during the downstairs check-in. Fortunately, she didn't sustain injuries. Still, nothing detracted from the glamour, celebrity, and fashion star power at the 60th-anniversary ceremony, in partnership with Amazon Fashion, that packed even more accolades and star wattage into one night than even its flashiest preceding events.

Hosted by Natasha Lyonne, other boldface names in attendance include Bradley Cooper, Vanessa Hudgens, Lenny Kravitz, Trevor Noah, Bowen Yang, and Katie Holmes. The co-hosts were a lineup of A-list American designers Joseph Altuzarra, Gabriela Hearst, Aurora James, Lazaro Hernandez, and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler.

The turnout humbled CFDA CEO Steven Kolb for the anniversary event. "It does seem more star-studded. We got a bunch of great names. We always have a strong roster of celebrities, but this year, the stars really lined up tonight," he said at the pre-dinner cocktail, adding, "we have a few surprise presenters too!"

Christina Ricci and Catherine Holstein - CFDA

Second-time nominee Catherine Holstein of Khaite was named American Womenswear Designer of the Year, presented by Christina Ricci, and decked out in Rodarte, remaining unbiased. (Seeing Ricci amid fashion with a capital 'F', one couldn't help but think of Ricci's time walking for Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton.)

Emily Adams Bode Aujla of Bode was named American Menswear Designer of the Year presented by Trevor Noah. Raul Lopez of Luar took home American Accessory Designer of the Year, and the American Emerging Designer of the Year was presented to Elena Velez.

Socially-focused awards were also given, such as the Positive Social Influence Award to 'Slaysians' from The House of Slay featuring Prabal Gurung, Laura Kim, Phillip Lim, Tina Leung, and Ezra William. Gurung was among the first and was awestruck by the recognition but wondering where the rest were during the cocktail. "Shit happens, you know," he said jokingly. All were in attendance to accept. Model Amber Valletta presented The United Nations with the Environmental Sustainability Award, which was accepted by Amina J. Mohammed, United Nations Deputy Secretary-General.

There were a few inaugural awards too. Martha Stewart, in lieu of Amy Schumer, who presumably bowed out when it was revealed after her SNL hosting gig that her 3-year-old son had been hospitalized for RSV, presented the inaugural Innovation Award presented by Amazon Fashion to Skims, which was accepted by Kim Kardashian, Emma Grede, and Jens Grede while Law Roach received the inaugural Stylist Award from Kerry Washington.

Legacy-centric awards were given to Andrew Bolton from the Met, who received the Founder's Award in honor Eleanor lambert Award presented by Anna Wintour, while former CFDA president Stan Herman presented the Special Anniversary Award to Jeffrey Banks. Los Angeles rock-aesthetic jewelers Laurie Lynn Stark and Richard Stark of Chrome Hearts were awarded the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award by Cher and musician daughter Jesse Jo Stark. The award was significant because jewelry brands don't usually figure into the awards much, if at all.

This was echoed by Lauren Harwell Godfrey, an emerging San Francisco-based fine jeweler who won a Gem Award in 2022 for her unique aesthetic and was an emerging designer nominee.

"This was a real surprise as there are more apparel designers in this group, so to be nominated by this apparel-focused group was even more special. Fine jewelry is fashion, so I am glad to see that recognized," she said pre-show standing alongside her "cheerleader" artist Ashley Longshore donning a spectacular dragonfly piece.

In one of the most emotional moments of the evening, Shannon Abloh accepted the posthumous Board of Trustees Award on behalf of her late husband, Virgil Abloh.

Keke Palmer and Elena Velez - CFDA

Incoming CFDA Chairman Thom Browne may have taken home the award for most dressed as he had a gaggle of star-studded guests bedecked in his designs, such as Gigi Hadid, Amy Sherald, Ayo Edebiri, Huma Abedin, Jaden Smith, Jesse Williams, Justin Theroux, Precious Lee, and Janelle Monae, who lingered for photos and to admire her look before entering the cocktail.

“Sure thirteen is my lucky number,” she concurred when asked about the football-jersey inspired gown.

As guests mingled at the pre-dinner cocktail, the meaning of the 'American Archival' dress code was loosely followed or, if at all. Jerry Lauren, Ralph's brother and executive vice president of men's design proclaimed, "Ralph Lauren is American Archival. We really saw that at the show in Los Angeles."

He dressed in a men's double-breasted suit jacket. "Did the double-breasted men's suit ever go away?" he pondered, adding. "It's here forever; it never left. What we have been doing for 53 years and what we do now is more loved than ever before."

Lenny Kravitz winning the style icon award—presented by Bradley Cooper— certainly couldn't be argued with, but with the likes of Cher—who caused the final red carpet roar of the night when she walked in about 30 minutes past the seating time—plus Janelle Monae, The Kardashian-Jenner clan, Christina Ricci, Gigi Hadid and more, it was evident that choosing that winner yearly must have the CFDA board debating for hours.

Cher was also there to present the industry icon, and stylist Patti Wilson was being awarded the Media Award in honor of Eugenia Shepard showed up with date jeweler Eddie Borgo dressed head-to-toe in Schiaparelli, including a massive gold helmet-style hat (hats are Patti's style signature) and was still taking it all in.

Raul Lopez and Joel Kim Booster - CFDA

"When I got the email, I thought, 'What is Steven Kolb emailing me about?' It took a while to sink in, and then I thought, 'OMG, I don't do interviews, I don't go out, I just work, and I completely panicked," she recalled. "I don't wear gowns and don't know what to do with myself, so I called Daniel Roseberry because he is quirky, beautiful, sensual, and just everything," she said, pointing out her "tits," which were circular leather patches on the dress bodice.

2020 CFDA American Womenswear Designer of the Year Gabriela Hearst and guest Marisa Tomei were fanning on each other.

"Of course, I love her movies, but I really clicked with Marisa when we met," said the designer up for the award again this year. Tomei wearing a gold suit, black top handle bag, and bedecked in the designer's array of semi-precious fine jewelry, said she was smitten with the designs and more when she discovered the collection and the woman behind it. "What I love is that Gabriela's values come through in her designs," Tomei said.

Emerging Designer Award Bach Mai was jubilated to be recognized for his collection, launched just last February. On his arm was The Summer I Turned Pretty actress Minnie Mills, who had already favored Mai's custom designs for her red carpet appearance earlier this year. Also in tow was the Neiman Marcus team, who have proudly boasted of being the first retailer to carry the Houston-bred, Paris-trained designer's ready-made looks.

"I'm from Texas, so I love telling everyone I had my 13th birthday party at Neiman Marcus, and it feels full circle now 20 years later," he gushed, adding he was catching a 6 a.m. flight for the Lone Star state. "I'm heading to my hometown for a two-day Neiman Marcus Bach Mai extravaganza," he said, beaming.
