John Lewis is slow in latest week but own brand and Valentine's boost Fashion sales

It was a slow week at best at John Lewis in the seven days to February 18 with sales down 0.2% overall to £74.98m. That was despite Valentine’s Day falling into the week this time round.

The Modern Rarity range helped drive fashion sales higher at John Lewis

But Fashion was the star directory with sales up 1.4% year-on-year, and the spring/summer offer from the company’s higher-end own brand range Modern Rarity proving “very popular”.

Sales of beauty, wellbeing and leisure products were up 11.2% as customers bought gifts for Valentine's Day.

Electrical and Home Technology sales were up only 0.4% on last year, driven by communications tech products, which were up 6%. And the retailer saw strong demand for Apple Mac products.

However, sales of Home products were down 1.5% although, again, Valentine’s Day gave the directory a boost with accessories and gifts up 8.5% as a result of customers buying presents.

And the company is upbeat on the prospects for the current week as it is launching popular, US brand West Elm in its Southampton and Welwyn shops.
