Topshop announced last week that it will close its Westfield Stratford City flagship store when the lease ends, but the unit will not remain vacant for long as JD Sports has jumped at the opportunity to expand its presence at the centre.

Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield said on Friday that JD Sports signed a 10-year lease on the 31,000 sq ft store, a move that will see the sports retailer more than quadruple its current space.

JD Sports will also continue to operate its existing store located on the ground floor.

The thriving sportswear company is keen on having a larger footprint at the popular shopping centre, which is also home to Adidas, Footasylum, Foot Locker and The North Face.

In a market dominated by streetwear influences, JD Sports has managed to stay ahead of the game by nurturing long-standing partnerships with the likes of Nike and Adidas, investing in physical stores and cultivating a sense of exclusivity.

Founded in 1981, the business has seen shares rocket by approximately 3,200% in the past decade.

“We are thrilled to announce the expansion of JD Sports at Westfield Stratford City as they take over the ex Topshop unit to launch a second store at the centre,” said Keith Mabbett, director of leasing UK/Italy at Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield.

“We have been working closely with JD Sports to identify the best space to meet their growing needs to create a flagship store. The expansion demonstrates the success of JD Sports with high demand for the brand and the increasing trend for retailers stores to create larger footprints at our centres. We have no doubt the new store will be hugely successful with our shoppers.”
