MD Michael Ward, who has been with the company since 2006, when it was owned by Mohamed Al Fayed, is stepping down from the role, Sky News reported. It is not clear whether a successor has been found. The news was announced internally to Harrods staff on Thursday evening (March 10).

Ward, who is a former executive at Apax Partners, was named the new Chairman of UK luxury brands alliance Walpole in February this year. He has been a Walpole board director since November 2012.

Harrods is owned by Qatar Holding and attracts 15m shoppers each year. A Harrods spokeswoman declined to comment to Sky News about Ward's departure.

Harrods is sponsoring this year's Vogue Festival on May 21-22.
