Graduate Fashion Week has announced that its annual event will not take place this year due to the global health crisis.

The board of trustees considered the options of postponement, curtailment and event redesign, but determined the potential risk was “too high” for the event to go ahead at this time.

Graduate Fashion Week was due to take place at the end of May at the Old Truman Brewery in East London, welcoming thousands of fashion students from across the UK and abroad.

“The cancellation of this year’s event will no doubt come as a terrible blow to our incredibly talented final year students, our global member universities and our supportive sponsors and partners, who have been working so hard to make this event happen,” said the organisers.

“Graduate Fashion Week is inextricably linked to the academic year. This, plus the closing of academic buildings and facilities and dramatic changes to students in their final year of studies, meant postponing was not a viable option.”

Ticket holders will be offered the option of getting a refund or donating the money to Graduate Fashion Foundation.

And while Graduate Fashion Week will not be taking over the Old Truman Brewery this summer, a series of activities will be introduced to showcase students’ work. More details about these activities are being kept under wraps, but the initiatives are likely to be in digital form.
