Luxury multibrand retailer Flannels’ long-term commitment to opening a store on Nottingham’s Lister Gate may have taken a significant step forward.

The Frasers Group’s high-end retail brand has submitted plans for a new store front at 11-13 Lister Gate, the site of a former River Island store, reported The BusinessDesk.

Despite plans to develop the vacant unit in summer of 2021, initial works carried out to clear the site have stalled, until now. Flannels already has a Nottingham store on Bridlesmith Gate and it remains unclear whether this unit will remain when the Lister Gate venue finally opens.

The latest news will come as a boost to Lister Gate, which has suffered since the closure and ongoing part-demolition of the Broadmarsh shopping centre. The whole 20-acre area is being rebuilt as part of a £500 million combined shopping centre and leisure/park.

Flannels has been a major retail expansion success story, mostly following the end of the pandemic, having spent big on opening major units in key city centres around the country. Its tally is currently approaching 60 units.

In June it opened its biggest investment to date with a “revolutionary" and “groundbreaking” seven-floor 120,000 sq ft store in Liverpool. That follows openings in Preston, Romford, Brighton, Southampton, Leicester, Birmingham and Belfast all in the last two years.
