The eternal problem when the winter months roll in is always: how to stay warm and still look stylish? British luxury tailoring brand Emel + Aris, which launched in 2015, aimed to come up with a solution.

The company is launching the world's first Smart Coat on Kickstarter on March 11. The collection consists of tailored coats that feature Emel + Aris' intelligent heating technology, for a combination of style and practicality.

"The revolutionary heating technology uses a lightweight, inert polymer instead of wires and produces FIR (far infrared) heat energy that is absorbed by the skin to heat the muscles and increase blood flow. The benefits of Far Infrared (FIR) therapy have long been recognised and recent research has validated the vast range of medical claims of FIR, including increased blood flow, pain relief and boosted immune system," the brand says.

To start with, women can choose between a cotton trench and cashmere-blend wrap coat, while men have the option of a cashmere blend overcoat and cotton three-quarter length raincoat. Well-known Italian luxury brand Loro Piana has made the fabric for the coats, which are also treated with Lora Piana’s Storm System® to make them water-repellent and windproof.

Emel + Aris wool coats are meant for cooler temperatures, while the lighter weight cotton coats can be worn in milder conditions, "where the integrated heat is a huge benefit," the brand says.
