It said the shoes are easy to pull on and wipe clean and come with enhanced flexibility and cushioning, offering NHS staff working on the wards and in theatre more comfort after long shifts.

The pairs of shoes for both men and women were delivered in a lorry this month.

Daniel Rubin, executive chairman of Dune said: “It is our absolute pleasure and indeed our duty, to support our fabulous NHS during these challenging times. We hope that our small token of support will go some way to helping the dedicated teams working in these hospitals.”

Dune, which is promoted by X-Files star Gillian Anderson in its Spring/Summer 2020 campaign, joins several footwear companies in their efforts to support healthcare workers during the coronavirus crisis.

Allbirds has donated 2,000 pairs of shoes to NHS workers in the UK, Nike distributed 32,000 trainers across the UK, Europe and America and Crocs contributed over 200,000 pairs of shoes globally.

Meanwhile, clothing businesses including Net-A-Porter, Barbour, Victoria Beckham and Kurt Geiger have donated everything from delivery vans, surgical masks, free handbags and a percentage of sales.
