The British Retail Consortium (BRC) is behind a new national ad campaign calling on the public to start their Christmas shopping earlier this year to help spread demand in the face of the second Covid-19 wave.

The ‘Shop early, start wrapping, enjoy Christmas’ campaign will start on national and local radio stations from this week, with further placements running across national print and social channels until early November.

“Whilst celebrations will no doubt be a little different this year, we know customers want to keep Christmas special. That’s why we’re encouraging people to shop early and prevent the last minute rush so their fellow customers and all the store colleagues, warehouse workers and delivery drivers working behind the scenes, have the space they need to stay safe and well,” said Helen Dickinson, Chief Executive of the British Retail Consortium.

According to the trade body’s sales monitor, some customers have already started a little earlier than usual, sending retail sales up 6.1% on a like-for-like basis in September.

The campaign underlines the benefits of early Christmas shopping, from convenience to managing finances. With social distancing measures and new restrictions in place, retailers are also urging consumers to help make sure everyone has the space to stay safe, including shoppers and store staff.

November and December are usually the busiest shopping months of the year, but this festive season is unlikely to be a traditional affair amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. With more Britons shopping online than ever before, the campaign also calls on the public to consider warehouse workers and delivery drivers.
