Amazon records $11-billion adspend to be world's biggest advertiser
Feb 5, 2020
Amazon has hit another milestone earning the title of "the biggest advertiser on earth" as its annual advertising expense reaches $11 billion.
The online retail and cloud giant announced in its 2019 annual report an increase of its annual advertising expense of 34 percent, or $2.8bn, year on year.
Amazon said the jump was due a larger spend on advertising and other promotional costs to market its products and services.
"We direct customers to our stores primarily through a number of marketing channels, such as our sponsored search, third-party customer referrals, social and online advertising, television advertising and other initiatives," the annual report said.
As the world’s top advertiser, it has surpassed consumer good giants like Procter & Gamble and Unilever.
Most recently, Amazon could be found advertising during the U.S. Super Bowl where it produced a commercial featuring TV personality Ellen DeGeneres.
Last week, it re-entered the $1 trillion club after announcing a net sales jump of 21 percent to $87.4 billion, in its fourth quarter.
Amazon has been in and around the $1 trillion mark for a while now, accompanied by the other tech giants like Apple Inc, Alphabet Inc and Microsoft Corp.
