Despite the gloomy market conditions, consumers are still splashing out on luxury fragrances with Emporio Armani, Christian Dior and Chanel boosting The Fragrance Shop sales over the festive period.

The retail chain revealed this week a 5.6% rise in like-for-like sales for the six weeks to 31 December, supported by a 30% increase in online sales. Overall sales were up 14.6%.

23 December proved to be the chain’s busiest trading day ever, with almost 100,000 bottles of fragrances sold to consumers looking to treat themselves or their loved ones for Christmas. Emporio Armani's Stronger With You, Miss Dior by Christian Dior and Chanel’s latest fragrance Gabrielle emerged as bestsellers.

Gift sets and fragrances from designer brands including Jean Paul Gaultier and Loewe were also popular.

The Fragrance Shop chief executive Sanjay Vadera commented: "There is no sign of luxury fragrances falling out of consumer favour as a great festive gift. Fragrances are intensely personal and the popularity of scents like Chanel Gabrielle and Miss Dior suggests people feel a connection to the brands behind them.

"The feedback we receive shows our customers value our approach that combines competitive prices with tailored advice on choosing the right fragrance, whether as a gift or as a treat for themselves. It's this offer, delivered by our outstanding store teams, that ensures our growth continues to outperform the market."

The Manchester-based business is planning to add 20 new stores to its UK store estate this year. It has 214 locations across the country, including a site on London’s Oxford Street and shops in major shopping centres such as Westfield and Bluewater.
