Supreme launches MetroCard with New York City transit

Published

After months of speculation, the New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority has finally announced the launch of a Supreme-branded MetroCard. The MetroCard was released Monday morning at a select few MetroCard machines around the city.

The MetroCard, which retails for $75 and includes two trips on the New York Subway (worth $5.50), is part of Supreme’s Spring 2017 collection.

Taking to Twitter Monday morning, the New York City subway announced that a Supreme-branded MetroCard is now available via select machines at eight different stations, including Prince St, Union Square, and Broadway Lafayette.

The Tweet sent Supreme-enthusiasts into a frenzy. Fans of the brand quickly descended on the identified stations to try and get their hands on the MetroCard, but with many heading home disappointed. Meanwhile scalpers have already listed the MetroCard on eBay for over $120.

Supreme has looked to unconventional products before. In a tongue-in-cheek reference to the idea that fans of the brand will buy anything with the Supreme logo on it, the street wear label has so far released a hammer, a calculator, a camping chair, and even a clay brick, all bearing the box logo.

Supreme’s distinct red box logo and cult-following has led the brand to a wide variety of collaborations, most recently with Louis Vuitton, North Face, Timberland, and Vans. While the brand tends to stick to partnering with the apparel and footwear realms, Supreme has launched some out-of-the-ordinary collaborations before, such as 2002's toy collection with 360 Toy Group, and 1998's release of a line of BMX bikes with Brooklyn Machine Works.
