Next shakes off retail gloom as it opens superstore at Intu Metrocentre

Next has re-opened at Intu Metrocentre in Gateshead in a unit previously occupied by the collapsed department store BHS.

With 78,000 sq ft of space over two levels, the new store is one of Next’s largest in the UK, and more than doubles the size of its former store at the shopping centre. In addition to the latest collections for women, men and children, the store has a home department and a Costa Coffee.

The opening follows a period of investment at the centre which has led to the refurbishment of the Platinum Mall as well as the creation and extension of a dining quarter.

Mark Russell from Next said: “We’ve invested a significant amount at Intu Metrocentre to ensure that our new store is really worth the wait. The new concepts we have are amazing and we believe that all customers are going to love what we have in store.”

Next’s decision to open one of the largest stores in its portfolio contrasts with other British brands, like New Look and Mothercare, which are looking to reduce their store estate amid challenging trading conditions.

Meanwhile fast-fashion brand Missguided has launched a redundancy scheme to cut around 100 of its 800 jobs.

Next will reveal its full year results on Friday 23 March. It expects full price sales to grow by between -2% and +4%, and profit is forecasted to be around £705m.
