Ikea opens its 20th store in the UK

Ikea has hit a milestone this week as it opened the doors of its newest UK shop in Sheffield, creating 480 jobs. The opening takes the Swedish brand’s total number of UK stores to 20.

Ikea has been in the UK for 30 years, and plans to open two more locations in Exeter and Greenwich by the end of 2017.

Gillian Drakeford, country manager for Ikea in the UK and Ireland, said: "Today is an important milestone for us, with Ikea Sheffield being our 20th store in the UK. The opening of Ikea Sheffield marks the continuation of a significant period of growth for our business.

"As we celebrate our 30th anniversary in the UK next month, we remain committed to building a strong and trusted brand whilst continuing to bring Ikea closer to many people."

The £60m new store occupies a space of 35,000 sq mts and is located near the Meadowhall shopping centre.
This is Ikea’s most sustainable store to date, boasting of a BREEAM ‘excellent’ accreditation and incorporating technologies like photovoltaic panels and rainwater harvesting.

The store has a restaurant, bistro and a crèche, and sells more than 9,500 products including the bestseller Billy bookcase.
