Hammerson resurrects giant Birmingham development

Yesterday we asked the question, is it possible to have a day go by without news about Hammerson at the moment? And today the answer seems to be no. Fresh from the cancellation of its on-again, off-again purchase of rival Intu, it seems the company is resurrecting a major development in Birmingham that could dwarf the Bullring centre in size.

The Bullring is Hammerson's biggest Birmingham property but could be dwarfed by a new development

The company intends to accelerate its plan for a 283,140sq ft scheme at the Martineau Galleries site on Dale End, a prime location that will benefit from being next door to the proposed HS2 station on Curzon Street as well as the Colmore Row business district.

Specialist publication Property Week said the plan had been on the shelf for some time and locals had been urging the property giant to either go ahead or pass the site on to a company that would do something with it.

Hammerson is already the highest profile retail landlord in central Birmingham via the Bullring and the Grand Central retail scheme next to New Street Station and this new concept could be bigger than the former.

“We are working with Birmingham City Council evolving a concept master plan for the Martineau Galleries site,” a spokesman told Property Week. “It is an important strategic location in the city centre and we will be bringing forward the master plan later this year as well as progressing toward the submission of a planning application.”
