Debenhams’ restructuring is set to claim up to 90 job losses across the retailer’s fashion and home department as it desperately attempts to turn around its fortunes.

The struggling UK department store chain has launched a consultation with around 200 employees including buyers and merchandisers, in a move that could see up to 90 jobs axed.

It follows plans to cut 320 store management jobs under a large-scale restructuring strategy aimed at ensuring the business remains profitable amid increasing pressure on the high street.

National department stores like Debenhams, House of Fraser and M&S are being hit by declining sales as consumers turn to online stores to find more selection, better prices and more trend-led clothing.

In a bid to transform itself for the digital era, Debenhams announced the business would refocus on three core areas: fashion and home, beauty and food, and events, earlier this year.

In addition to the new strategy, the business is trying to cut costs fast after issuing its third profit warning this year in June. It hopes its new measures will help it save £10 million in the current financial and £20 million each year from 2019.

Debenhams said in a statement: “We announced our intention to restructure our business around three business units: beauty and beauty services, fashion and home, and food and events earlier this year.

“Our work to create a simplified and consistent structure across these units, reducing complexity and driving efficiency in order to deliver our Debenhams Redesigned strategy is continuing.”
