To promote biodiversity conservation and farmer livelihoods in India, the C&A Foundation announced this week a partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature India, unveiling a programme that aims to help 6,000 farmers to obtain organic cotton certification by the end of 2018.

The joint project, targeted for the Satpuda-Pench corridor of Central India, comprises trainings to teach farmers how to build the fertility of soil to increase yields, and make natural plant pesticides and compost. Farmers completing the programme will be able to obtain organic certifications, giving them better access to international organic cotton markets.

“Our vision for this partnership is to maintain the ecology of the Satpuda-Pench corridor while enhancing the livelihoods of cotton farmers, who play such a critical role in the apparel industry value chain,” said Anita Chester, head of sustainable raw materials for C&A Foundation.

C&A Foundation was founded in 2011 by the Netherland’s C&A fashion chain to improve the local communities where the company operates. The institution focuses on sustainable products and sustainable supply, and supports a range of activities that aim to improve the social and environmental impact of the apparel supply chain.
