JOHANNESBURG, Sept 7 (Reuters) - South Africa's AngloGold Ashanti (ANGJ.J) suspended production at a section of its Mponeng underground mine in South Africa following a fatal accident, a company official said on Monday 7 September.

Alan Fine, a spokesman for AngloGold, the world's third largest gold producer, said a worker died in hospital on Sunday 6 September following injuries he sustained in a "fall of ground" or subsidence accident at the Mponeng mine the previous day.

"We are not carrying out any production in the area where the accident happened. There will be further investigations to ascertain the cause of the accident today," Fine said.

Fine could not immediately say how much output would be lost after the suspension of work where the accident took place.

South Africa, which has the world's deepest mines, has one of the highest rates of work-related mining deaths in the industrialised world. Last year 168 workers died in mines, down 24 percent from the previous year. So far nearly 120 miners have died in South African mines this year.
